The importance of pediatric eye exams

Kid’s Eye Care

A child should start getting their eyes checked as early as six months of age.

Kids especially need to have eye exams, even if a problem isn’t suspected, to make sure any poor eyesight is detected and their vision is normal.

Experts say 5 to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. Early detection enables treatment to start before the child has trouble in school because of poor vision – or before any permanent damage has been done to their eyes.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends every child have a complete eye exam at six months, three years and before they enter kindergarten, or about at age five or six. While in school, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is needed. However, kids who need eyeglasses should be examined annually or according to their eye doctor’s recommendations.

The most common eye problems found in children

Besides checking for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, Dr. O’Donnell will also be examining your child’s eyes for signs of the following eye and vision problems that are commonly found in children. Conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) are often present at birth, and should be treated early to help reduce the risk of complications.

He also treats eye infections, allergies and any other eye conditions that your child might have.
